I’ve just spent 45 minutes shaking my little butt and waggling my glow sticks in a dark room for you guys! Yes, I took it upon myself to road test the brand new class at Virgin Active, Pulse, so I can give you my verdict.

From the moment the lights went out and the 1994 smasher ‘I like to move it move it’ came blaring out I knew it was a good choice of class to spice up my cardio.

There were 25 ladies packed enthusiastically into the studio and no-one could contain their cheeky grins as the Glowsticks were dished out – not any old glowsticks I might add – Virgin have obviously had these bad boys specially made, no snapping them to activate, these beauties have little straps you can pop your hands through ( a good idea if you’re prone to frantically waving your hands around so you don’t bash your new neighbour on the head mid running man!) Then you press a small button and there’s 2 modes – flashing or a static colour! Snazzy!

The great thing about Pulse is that the lights are turned down low so you can really shake your thang if you feel like it, no-one cares if you’re crap and can’t quite master the moves, just keep moving, enjoy the tunes and try and burn as many calories as you can.

The class itself is predominantly low impact, but there are variations you can add in if you want to make it harder. The focus really is on having a bloody good time and keeping moving – so it’s a great choice for all fitness levels.

After chest pumping, grape vining and generally just having a ball through tracks such as Baby D’s ‘Let me be your fantasy’  (a personal favourite of mine that reminds me of a particularly amusing night out with friends when we were all far too young to be actually out … more on that another time though! :)) my fitbit surge reckoned I’d burnt 280 calories* – not quite the 500 that were quoted as a potential (that was for the 60 minute classes though) nonetheless, I smiled, I felt 14 for a while and I had great fun with a group of like minded ladies – so it get’s a big thumbs up from me and I’ll be going along again next week!Pulse virgin active review fitnology
